Tipping math is simple in principle but awkward at the table, especially when splitting a bill among several people. This calculator does it instantly: enter the bill (run it through the sales tax calculator first if your total doesn't already include tax), choose a tip percentage, and set the number of people to get the tip amount, the grand total, and each person's share.
How does this calculator work?
Enter the bill amount, the tip percentage, and how many people are splitting it. The calculator shows the tip, the total, and each person's share.
Worked example
An $86.40 dinner bill, an 18% tip, split between three people.
- Bill
- $86.40
- Tip (18%)
- $15.55
- Total
- $101.95
- Per person (÷3)
- $33.98
How the numbers work
The tip is the bill times the percentage: $86.40 × 18% = $15.55. Add it to the bill for the total, $86.40 + $15.55 = $101.95, then divide by 3 people to get about $33.98 each.
Bump the tip to 20% and it becomes $17.28, making each share $34.56, a reminder that the per-person jump from a couple of extra tip points is small.
A quick mental shortcut for 20%: take 10% of the bill (move the decimal one place) and double it.
