RV loans are among the longest consumer installment loans available. Large motorhomes are frequently financed over 15 to 20 years, more like a mortgage than a car loan, so the interest math, and the depreciation trade-off, are especially important to understand before you buy.

Before you commit, check how this payment affects your debt-to-income ratio.

This calculator amortizes your RV loan, totals the interest across the full term, and charts the rig's declining value against your loan balance so you can see if you might go underwater and how long you'd stay.

How does this calculator work?

Enter the RV's price and the amount you're financing after down payment and trade-in. Lenders usually want 10–20% down, and motorhomes generally require more equity than towable trailers.

Set the term and APR. Terms range widely: from about 5 years on small towables to 20 years on large Class A motorhomes. Solve for any field by entering a target payment.

Add an extra monthly payment. On a 15- or 20-year note even small extra principal dramatically cuts total interest, so this is where the biggest savings live.

Set a depreciation rate to plot resale value against your balance. RVs depreciate steeply in the early years, so the long terms can keep you underwater for much of the loan.

Worked example

Imagine a $120,000 Class A motorhome with 15% down ($18,000), financing $102,000 at 7.25% APR over 15 years.

How the numbers work

The $931.12 payment is the amortization result for $102,000 at 7.25% (about 0.604% per month) over 180 months.

On a 15-year term the first month's interest ($102,000 × 0.604% = $616.25) swallows most of the payment, leaving only $314.87 for principal. That's why a long RV loan keeps you underwater so long against a fast-depreciating rig.

Total interest reaches $65,602 over the full term, roughly two-thirds of the amount borrowed.

Over 15 years the interest alone reaches $65,602, about 64% of what you borrowed. A 10-year term raises the payment to $1,197.49 but cuts interest to $41,699, saving $23,903.

Pair that with steep early depreciation and the 20-year terms that make big rigs 'affordable' can leave you deeply underwater for years. The value chart shows exactly when equity turns positive.

Is your RV a tax-deductible second home?

Like a qualifying boat, an RV with sleeping, cooking, and toilet facilities can count as a second home for federal tax purposes, potentially making the loan interest deductible as home mortgage interest if the loan is secured by the RV. This is a genuine advantage RV loans share with marine loans and not with car loans. The deduction has limits and the rules change, so verify with a tax professional.

Motorhomes vs. towables

Towable trailers (travel trailers, fifth-wheels) are cheaper, depreciate somewhat more slowly, and are usually financed over shorter terms. Motorized RVs (Class A, B, and C) cost far more, depreciate faster, and carry the longest terms. Because the depreciation curve differs, set the rate in the calculator to reflect the type of rig you're financing rather than a one-size-fits-all figure.

RV Loan Calculator glossary

Amount Financed
The RV's price minus down payment and trade-in: the principal you borrow.
Class A / B / C
Motorhome classes by size and build. Class A are the largest and most expensive, built on a bus chassis. Class B are the smallest, built on a van chassis. Class C fall in between, built on a truck or van chassis with the original cab and a distinctive over-cab sleeping bunk.
Towable
A non-motorized RV, such as a travel trailer or fifth-wheel, pulled by a separate vehicle.
Loan Term
The repayment period in years. RV loans range from about 5 to 20 years, the longest of any vehicle loan.
Depreciation Rate
The annual percentage of value lost. RVs, especially motorhomes, depreciate steeply in the first few years.
Negative Equity
Owing more than the RV is worth: common and long-lasting on 15- to 20-year loans.
Down Payment
Cash paid upfront; lenders usually want 10–20%, and motorhomes generally require more than towables.
Total Interest
The sum of all interest paid over the life of the loan, on top of the amount financed.
Second-Home Deduction
An RV with sleeping, cooking, and toilet facilities may qualify as a second home, making the loan interest deductible.

RV Loan Calculator FAQs

How long can you finance an RV?+

RV loans often range from about 6.5% to 10% APR, with terms up to 15–20 years on larger motorhomes. Small towables are usually financed over shorter terms. Longer terms lower the payment but greatly increase total interest.

Is RV loan interest tax deductible?+

It can be if the RV qualifies as a second home (with sleeping, cooking, and toilet facilities) and the loan is secured by the RV. Limits apply and rules change, so confirm with a tax professional.

How much down payment do I need for an RV?+

Lenders typically want 10–20% down. Motorhomes usually require more than towables because they're more expensive and depreciate faster.

Do RVs depreciate quickly?+

Yes, especially motorhomes, which can lose a large share of value in the first few years. Combined with long loan terms, that means many RV owners stay underwater for years. Set the depreciation rate to see the timeline for your rig.

Will extra payments help on an RV loan?+

More than on almost any other vehicle loan. Because terms are so long, extra principal avoids years of compounding interest. The calculator shows the months and dollars you'd save.
